Anthony Petrello Combines Success with Philanthropy

Few people in the world have reached the level of success of Anthony Petrello. Tony as he prefers, is the President of Nabors Industries, the largest land-based drilling company in the world, based in Houston, Texas. He is recognized worldwide as a leader in the oil and gas industry. Under his leadership, Nabors Industries has an annual revenue of over 6 billion and employees almost 30,000 men and women. Before joining Nabors Industries, Anthony Petrello was a highly regarded lawyer working for the New York firm Baker & McKenzie. During his over ten year tenure with the company he became proficient in tax law and compliance, it was his reputation in these fields that prompted Nabors Industries to pursue him. Tony made a move to Nabors Industries in 1991 as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and was named the president in 1992. Since 2012 he has been the Chairman of the Board and served as the Deputy Chairman from 2003-2012. Along with his position at Nabors Industries, Anthony Petrello is also a director for two other oil exploration companies, Stewart &Stevenson and Hilcorp Energy Company. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and holds an M.S. in mathematics from Yale.

Anthony Petrello’s personal life has sometimes been troubled, his daughter Carena was born with periventricular leukomalacia (cerebral palsy) due to her premature birth, she was born 24 weeks early. This troubling event turned out to be a turning point in his life, after realizing how little research was taking place in childhood neurological diseases he and his wife, Cynthia, decided to take action. Tony became proactive, learning about neurological diseases, their causes, and treatment. After meeting Dan and Jan Duncan, the couple who had started the Dan and Jan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) he soon donated $7 million to the research center. He currently serves on the board of trustees for TCH and is enlisting friends from the oil industry to join the fight against these horrible illnesses and learn more about Anthony.
